Travel assistance program to be postposed

2022.07.13

The government has decided to postpone the implementation of the "National Travel Assistance" program, a tourism support measure that had been scheduled to begin in the first half of July. The government will hold off until the infection situation of the new coronavirus improves. The "prefectural residents' discount," which is scheduled to end on August 14, will be extended until the end of August.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had planned to implement the measures starting in the first half of July on the condition that the infection situation would improve during June, but the number of infected people has started to increase, and the number of newly confirmed cases exceeded 70,000 on July 12. It is believed that he decided that it would be difficult to implement the plan while the infection is still spreading.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism Tetsuo Saito stated at a press conference on July 12, "We will make an appropriate decision during the first half of July after comprehensively assessing the infection situation based on the results of the expert panel of the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (to be held on July 13).
The implementation of the measures in July will be difficult and may be postponed until September or later.
